BARCELONA — Moroccan-Spanish social activist Hatem Azahari has won the 2026 Princess of Girona Social Award at a ceremony near Barcelona attended by Spain’s King Felipe VI, organizers said.
Azahari, founder of the youth-focused association Joves Units del Poble-Sec, was recognized for his work supporting young people at risk of social exclusion through community sports, safe spaces and the revitalization of public areas. The prize includes €200,000 and a commemorative artwork.
Established in 2019, the Barcelona-based initiative aims to create practical opportunities for marginalized youth, particularly in urban neighborhoods.
Raised in Spain, Azahari is studying social work and serves on Barcelona City Council’s Advisory Council Against Racism. He is also a trustee of the Bofill Foundation.
Award organizers praised his resilience and ability to transform personal challenges into lasting social impact, describing his journey as an inspiration for younger generations.
In brief remarks, Azahari stressed the power of communication in driving social change, calling for stronger human connections and more inclusive communities.
