Casablanca witnessed a solemn farewell on Saturday for the late Moroccan singer Abdelhadi Belkhayat, as citizens, artists, and political figures gathered to honor one of the nation’s most beloved musical icons. The funeral prayer was held at Al Nour Mosque, after which Belkhayat’s body was laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Cemetery amid a deeply moving atmosphere.

Prominent attendees included the celebrated singer Abdelwahab Doukali, who paid tribute to his late friend, former Prime Minister and Justice and Development Party leader Abdelilah Benkirane, and Omar Sayed of the legendary group Nass El Ghiwane, alongside Belkhayat’s family and devoted fans. All were united in mourning the passing of an artist whose voice defined generations of Moroccan music.

Belkhayat, 83, had recently been hospitalized following a health complication and passed away surrounded by the love and admiration of a nation. His death leaves a profound sense of loss among fans and colleagues in Morocco’s artistic community.

The Ministry of Youth and Culture issued a statement honoring Belkhayat’s life and work, highlighting his enduring contributions to Moroccan music. “His artistic and human legacy made him a symbol of authentic Moroccan song,” the statement read. “His voice will remain immortal in the hearts of the Moroccan people, a testament to decades of exceptional creativity.”

Born in 1940 in Fez, Belkhayat emerged in the 1960s as a pioneering voice that blended innovation with deep respect for tradition. In the later stages of his career, he embraced spiritual music, producing works that reflected his personal beliefs and intellectual journey, adding a new dimension to his rich artistic legacy.

Belkhayat’s passing marks the end of an era in Moroccan music, but his melodies, lyricism, and cultural influence will continue to resonate across generations.
