Norway’s parliament overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to maintain the monarchy, rejecting a proposal to establish a republic despite recent controversies in the royal family.

Of 169 lawmakers, 141 supported King Harald’s reign, while 26 voted for a republic. Supporters say the monarchy ensures stability above politics; critics argue that power should rest with elected officials.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit faced criticism for past contacts with convicted U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, prompting a public apology.

A recent poll shows 61% of Norwegians favour keeping the monarchy, down from 72% last year, while 27% support a republic. Support for Mette-Marit as future queen is lower, with 44% opposed.

Meanwhile, Mette-Marit’s 29-year-old son, Marius Hoiby, is on trial for rape, assault, domestic violence, and drug charges, which he denies.
