RABAT, Morocco – Morocco’s economy created a net 193,000 jobs between 2024 and 2025, driven by gains in urban employment that more than offset losses in rural areas, the country’s statistics agency said on Monday.

In its annual labour market report, the High Commission for Planning (HCP) said 203,000 jobs were added in urban areas, while rural regions lost 10,000 positions over the same period.

The increase was mainly fuelled by growth in paid employment, which rose by 249,000 jobs, while unpaid work declined by 55,000, the agency said.

Morocco’s labour force participation rate remained broadly stable at 43.5% between 2024 and 2025. However, participation fell by 0.4 percentage points in rural areas to 46.1%, while edging up by 0.2 points in urban areas to 42.2%.

By gender, participation was largely unchanged among men, slipping marginally to 68.5% from 68.6%, and among women, easing to 19% from 19.1%, according to the data.

The national employment rate rose slightly to 37.8% from 37.7%, reflecting diverging trends between urban and rural areas. Employment fell by 0.3 points in rural areas to 43%, while rising by 0.4 points in cities to 35.3%.

Employment among men increased by 0.4 points to 61.1%, while the rate for women declined by 0.2 points to 15.1%, the HCP said.
